Risk management in the payments ecosystem

A chargeback is a warning. The risk starts earlier.

Qualify Advisory uses chargebacks as a starting point to identify exposure, prevent losses, and strengthen risk decisions at acquirers, sub-acquirers, and other payments ecosystem companies.

By the time the indicator appears, the exposure may already be established.

A chargeback can signal risks that began before the dispute was filed. An increase in disputes may point to fraud, delivery failures, commercial issues, changes in merchants’ risk profiles, concentrated exposure, or weaknesses in the dispute process. Reviewing these signals together helps identify root causes and prevent losses from growing.

Fragmented signalsFragmented data and limited coordination across Risk, Operations, Commercial, and Fraud Prevention make it harder to identify causes and align responses.
Delayed visibilityDepending on the dispute reason and card network rules, a chargeback may be filed up to 120 days after the transaction or the expected delivery or service date. The underlying risk may therefore have formed months earlier.
Avoidable lossesMissed deadlines, insufficient evidence, and weak dispute criteria reduce the chances of financial recovery.
Recurring causesWithout addressing the source of a problem, a company manages its effects instead of reducing risk.

CaaS — Chargeback as a Service

CaaS: the model.

CaaS combines diagnostics, analytics, monitoring, stronger dispute management, and action on the causes of risk and loss.

Knowledge transferWorking together to build capability

CaaS is more than a chargeback management model. It is a consulting approach built on joint work and knowledge transfer.

Qualify Advisory works side by side with the client’s team to implement solutions, build processes, and develop capabilities that stay within the organization.

Consistent results depend on integrating people, processes, and technology.
01

Diagnostics

Review of processes, metrics, responsibilities, and systems to assess operational maturity and identify the main risk exposures.

02

Analytics

Identification of patterns, concentrations, high-risk segments, and recurring causes.

03

Monitoring

Dashboards and alerts to track trends, changes in risk exposure, dispute handling efficiency, and the quality of merchant network operations. Analysis by day, month, two-month period, quarter, and year.

04

Disputes

Stronger representment, evidence, deadline management, and win rates.

05

Prevention and efficiency

Team training, review and development of workflows and operating manuals, stronger controls, and identification of automation opportunities to scale analysis.

06

Governance

Policies, responsibilities, decision-making forums, and executive oversight.

From diagnostics to lasting management capability.

The assessment becomes an action plan with clear priorities, owners, and metrics to track results.

Clear view of risk exposureA view of the merchants and segments with the greatest exposure, the causes of losses, and how those risks change over time.
Prioritized action planShort- and medium-term actions, accountable owners, and follow-up criteria.
Efficient, scalable dispute managementMore consistent, measurable processes, including assessment of automation solutions to handle higher volumes without a proportional increase in headcount.
Ongoing managementMetrics, alerts, and governance routines to detect changes in risk profiles and guide timely action.
